New Mexico walking and cycling safety planning

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is asking for public input in developing a safety plan focused on people walking and cycling. There are a number of ways to get involved, including an online meeting Wednesday, August 9th, and an online map where you can report your observations and experiences. There will be additional meetings and planning focus groups going forward. Here are a few links to get started, with more detailed information about the project provided below. Please stay tuned. We’ll add more resources and spread the word as the planning process moves forward. Thank You.

Dear Stakeholder,

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is currently working on a Vulnerable Road User (VRU) Safety Assessment. This assessment will identify areas with high numbers and rates of crashes, which are considered “high-risk” to vulnerable road users (people walking, bicycling or rolling), and outline a program of projects and strategies to reduce safety risks in these areas.

This meeting is primarily focused on the roadway network in the greater Albuquerque area.

Get Involved!

New Mexico is ranked the most dangerous state in the nation for pedestrians, and Albuquerque is the second most deadly metro area in the nation. Please help us stop this trend. Community involvement is essential to addressing the roadway safety concerns of the communities impacted by NMDOT transportation plans and projects. We are reaching out to you for input on the VRU Safety Assessment, to help identify opportunities for safety improvements.

Join us at an upcoming virtual community meeting on Wednesday August 9th from 10 – 11:30am. At the meeting we will:

  • Introduce the NMDOT VRU Safety Assessment and data gathered on key safety issues.
  • Identify locations that are most deserving of transportation infrastructure improvements for vulnerable road users.
  • Discuss what types of projects are and are not working for you and your community to address safety issues for pedestrians, bicyclists and other vulnerable road users.

See the attached flyer for more information and register for the meeting at https://bit.ly/VRUmidregion. Please share with those in your network who you think would like to be involved.

Ongoing Engagement and Outcomes

There are several ways you and your community can provide input on the VRU Safety Assessment. Learn more about the project and leave comments on the interactive map at https://newmexicodotshsp.com. Community input will provide local expertise in the identification of high-risk crash locations and potential projects and strategies to address safety concerns, and ultimately inform the development of the Strategic Highway Safety Plan.
